Cleaning a grill before storage

Gas Grill Winter Storage Tips

Posted on: September 18, 2019 | Spaces Toronto October 21, 2019

As the days start to get cooler and shorter, it is time to start preparing for the colder months. Unfortunately, many items we use and love during the summer should not be left outside for the winter. One example of this is the grill. In order to keep your grill ready for next year’s barbecues, it is essential that it is properly winterized. Learn how to winterize a grill here.

How to Clean a Grill for Winter

Before you can store a grill, it should be properly cleaned. Follow these tips for cleaning a grill below.

  1. Clean the Inside of the Grill: Before storing your grill for winter, it is essential that you take the time to clean it. Any remaining food, grease or food residue may attract pests and vermin to your grill for a snack. The easiest and quickest way to clean the grill grates is to turn on the grill and let it heat to a mild temperate. Once it is hot, use a grill brush to scrub the grill grates and remove and leftover food.
  2. Scrub the Outside of the Grill: Next, focus on the outside of the grill. After a long season of grilling hot dogs, burgers and other delicious summer food, it’s amazing how much food residue can get stuck to the outside of your grill. Besides also attracting pests, grease left on the grill over the winter can cause a great deal of corrosion. Use a cloth and some soapy water to wipe down the outside of the grill.
  3. Wash Drip Pans: The last step to cleaning the grill is to clean the drip pan. First, turn the pan upside down and shake out anything inside. Next, put it in a bucket of hot, soapy water to soak.

3 Tips for Storing a Gas Grill for Winter

  1. Remove the propane tank: The propane tank is easily the most hazardous part about the grill. Before storing your grill, it is essential that you turn off the gas and disconnect the propane tank. The propane tank is highly combustible, so always store it in a well-ventilated area.
  2. Use a grill cover: Before placing a grill cover on your grill, make sure it is completely dry. When purchasing a grill cover, choose one that is waterproof and fits the grill snuggly. Using a grill cover is a smart way to keep your grill in the best condition possible.
  3. Keep the grill indoors: Even with the cover on, your grill is still exposed to fluctuations in temperature when stored outside. The best thing you can do to increase the longevity of your grill is to store it indoors in a dry location.

Store Your Grill in a Climate Controlled Storage Unit!

Unfortunately, storage space is not infinite in the home. And, due to the garage and basement of the house still being prone to fluctuations in temperature, these locations should not be used to store a sensitive item like a grill. Instead, consider storing your grill in a climate controlled storage unit. A climate controlled storage unit will help to keep your grill in the best shape possible by protecting it from any damaging fluctuations in temperature.
