How to Store a Lawn Mower for Winter
- Drain or Use the Gasoline: If there is a gasoline leftover in the tank, it is important to get it out before storing. If there is only a little bit of gasoline leftover in the tank, it may be easier to just run the engine until the fuel is used up. If the tank has quite a bit of fuel that you do not want to waste, it can be siphoned out.
- Disconnect the spark plug and blade: Before cleaning out the mower, remove the spark plug lead wire and tape or tie it out of the way. Once the spark plug has been removed, disconnect the lawn mower blade. This can be done by unscrewing all bolts that hold the blade in place. When handling the lawn mower blade, always wear gloves.
- Clean out the lawn mower: Next, either brush or hose the grass and mud out from inside of the lawn mower. If there is debris stuck inside of the mower, use a long stick to remove it.
- Remove the battery: The next step to storing your lawn mower is to remove the battery. After removing the battery, clean it with a metal brush and then coat all terminals with a terminal protector product. When storing the battery, be sure to store it in a cool and dry place away from any gas cans, the furnace or the water heater.
