Boat owners rejoice, it is finally time to get your boat out of storage and ready for the summer and summer months! Before you can spend the long summer days cruising the open water, it is important to prepare your boat for the season. Taking the time to prepare your boat for the warmer months will not only help it to run smoother all summer long, it also provides a great time to check your boat for damage.

Check out these must-follow boat maintenance tips!

Seasonal Boat Maintenance List for Summer

  • Take a look at the manufacturer’s service manual: The first step to preparing your boat for the summer is to take a look at the manufacturer’s service manual for any recommended seasonal maintenance. Different brands and types of boats will require different care and it is important your boat receives the care that is recommended. While this list is a guideline, you may need to create your own boat maintenance checklist specific to your model.
  • Check the engine: If you did not change your oil or oil filter before putting it away for the winter, do it now. If you removed the battery before storage, put it back into place and make sure it is secure in the battery box. Depending on how often you use your boat, many people recommend purchasing a new battery every year.
  • Inspect all safety equipment: You never know what you will run into during a boating adventure, and it is important to be prepared for anything. Before setting sail, you should have flares, flotation devices, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit onboard your boat. During your pre-sail check, look over all of your supplies to make sure they are in good working condition. Restock and repair any items that need it.
  • Check the lights: Your lights not only help you to see during night time water cruises, they also help other people see you. Spend time checking the lights on your boat to make sure they do not need replaced or repaired.
  • Inspect the raw-water intake strainer for damage: Check the raw-water intake strainer for any cracks, corrosion or damage. If the equipment shows signs of damage, replace it.

Need a Place to Store Your Boat Supplies?

Taking the boat out for the day or weekend requires a lot of supplies. Instead of cluttering your home with floaties, towels, coolers, water toys, fishing supplies and more, consider a storage unit rental. A storage unit rental allows you to keep all of your boating supplies together where you can easily access them before boating trips.
